Islamic Contributions and Inventions Project 10/26-10/31 Due 10/31

Today in class I checked and graded the notes from Tuesday this week and the ones from the PowerPoint last week. The project that we started today and hope to finish on monday is as follows:

Look on page 218-219 in the textbook. What it goes over are the cultural and scientific achievements of the Muslim people.

Then pick a category to choose from: ART,  ARCHITECTURE, LITERATURE, SCIENCE, SOCIAL

After you choose a category choose something specific from a category. There are thousands of things to choose from, examples are below:

Art = Depicting Muhammad
Architecture = Minaret
Literature = Algebra, History, the Quran
Science = Astrolobe, Surgical Tools
Social = Role of Women, Bazzar, Slavery

After choosing something to research, example Surgical Tools, these are the questions you need to find the answer to to put on a poster:

1. Explain what the invention or contribution is
2. Who it was made by( inventor person or city)
3. Around what time was it invented? (approximate, be exact as possible)
4. How do people use it? Is it still in use today? If so what form?
5. Which category above does it fit in? It can be multiple

Bellwork 10/23

Hello! The questions that we discussed in class are below:

11.     In 630, Muhammad returned to Makkah with 10,000 men. What was his status at this important time?

2.      Why is it important for governments today to have clear lines of succession? Muhammad dies just two years after returning to Makkah. What might have happened in the Arab world after the death of Muhammad?

For the answers that we discussed:

  1.  He was the messenger of Allah- the founder of Islam, he was a general who lead a strong army, and he was the head of church and state due to in Islam they mix politics and religion.
  2. A new leader would have been needed and there would have been a struggle for power. The interpretation of Islamic law could have changed. A division among the Islamic leaders could have caused a fracture that would cause the religion to disappear.
Today we also went over how you have access to make-up work and how to access the textbook from class online.
